A handle is the name you’ve chosen to represent you or yourself on Social Media. Your Instagram, Facebook (Business Pages AND Personal Pages), Youtube, and even Pinterest all “handles.” So why is this concept of a handle important to your brand?

Handles are the way that people find you and are often their FIRST IMPRESSION of your brand. There are a lot of strategies to naming your brand – keeping it simple, getting clever, a play on words, etc. Whatever you choose, remember it should be easy to remember and easy to blast everywhere! (If someone wants to give you a beautiful review online and they have to tag either @playbunny69 or try to remember your 12 syllable last name… things aren’t going to go over well.)

Here are some tips on choosing your handle according to Brittany Hennessy, author of “Influencer.”

·      You can make your name as simple or as complicated as you like, as long as it’s easy to promote.

·      Don’t make intentional spelling errors (forever = foreveerrrr, no one wants to remember how many e’s and r’s you chose to use…)

·      Don’t use numbers

·      No underscores

·      BE CONSISTENT

Consistency is a beautiful aspect in a brand when used effectively. Using consistent handles sets you up for success as it’s one of the first things you’ll do for your brand, and it’s one of the first things people see and search. Don’t make it hard for your audience to find you – invite them in with ease! Here are a few channels that require handle consistency:

·      Website

·      E-Mail

·      Twitter

·      Instagram

·      Facebook

·      Pinterest

·      LinkedIn

The Challenge:

Part 1: Secure your chosen handle on all social platforms, e-mail and domain. Take the list from above and put your name into action. EVEN IF you plan on not using a certain social platform, it’s always good to secure your name so no one else steals it.

Part 2: If you already have an account on all platforms, let’s do a quick review of your current handle(s):

-       Are they consistent?

-       Are they easy to remember?

-       Are they easy to type?

-       Do they fit your brand?

One of my favorite social media platforms to use these days is Instagram. Besides the fact that it’s basically all visual and you can immediately resonate with others - there’s plenty of ways to connect with new audiences and grow your brand without too much heavy lifting!

The growth strategy we’re going to be talking about today is #hashtags. More specifically - how YOU can create the best list of hashtags for your account and utilize a hashtag that’s all yours!

According to Later.com “A post with at least one Instagram hashtag averages 12.6% more engagement than posts without a hashtag.” In other words, if you’re on Instagram - you best be using these little suckers!

Let’s start off with, what in the actual hell is a #hashtag? We hear about them all the time on several platforms - but what do they do?

Hashtags are used to organize posts with similar content. You can use hashtags on videos or photos, but the overall goal is that you’re organizing content with other like content. If you’re anal about being completely organized - you probably just got really excited. But for those of you who are like “yeah, ok - great…” here’s why that’s important…

Once you post your image, you want it to get into your target audiences feed. If they’re not already following you, that’s generally never going to happen. (Womp, Womp.) HOWEVER, by tagging your image with a hashtag that your ideal clients would be interested in (For example, you tag your stamp business with #stamps) - it has a wayyyy better chance of getting seen by them. You’re basically placing your Instagram post in the laps of those who want to see it - all they have to do is look for the things they like!

A great engagement strategy, right? Right.

So here’s the details - you can have up to 30 hashtags on each post. Try to think of keywords that your ideal client is searching for. One of the biggest mistakes I make is that people are too busy tagging what they “are” or the technicalities of what they are, instead of what they help with. For example, if you’re a wedding photographer and only tagging things like “Camera, Nikon, Sony, Flash, Photographer” you may not get the engagement or the clients that you’d hoped for.

Get inside your ideal client’s mind! You’re a wedding photographer, so most likely they’re on Instagram searching for all things WEDDING. #BridetoBe #SweatingfortheWedding #WeddingPhotographer #Wedding #Engaged #JustEngaged … catch my drift? Tag yourself in any and all things wedding preparation because that’s what they’re interested in seeing!

The Challenge:

It’s time to revisit those hashtags (if you’ve been using some already) or to create your own list! Remember, you have up to 30 tags you can use and you should be thinking in terms of what the client is searching for. I’ll be doing this challenge with you guys this week so if you have any questions, let me know! :D When you go to post, you can post these in your actual caption or in a comment below. There’s been some discussion on which “works better” but for the most part it doesn’t seem to matter!
